A Morning Routine Life Hack

DIY Shower Affirmation Cards

Self-Care Squad Goals

Woman journaling during a Sarah King Creates workshop

In case you are new here, I am all for self-improvement, reflection, and self-care and you’ll find many creative ways to incorporate more of this throughout this blog. I also love learning new ways to nurture my mind, body, and soul. However, have you ever felt like in order to make positive improvements in your life you would need another 3 hours on your day to do the suggested things?

For instance, the thought of creating a meaningful morning routine that involves spending time journaling, reflecting, praying, making and drinking a smoothie plus my coffee, taking the dog out, meditating, setting intentions for my day, reciting affirmations, etc. can seem like I’d need to get up at 5 am to get it all in.  This becomes even more overwhelming when I historically would not say I am an early morning person.  Despite years and years of early morning swim practice, my body still barely rolls over at 5 am if I have a choice in the matter.

Therefore, for the past few years I have been experimenting with gradually adding in meaningful pieces that I feel led to in that season as well as finding ways for these positive aspects to overlap with movements I already do in order to make them achievable for me. For example, I have a note in my phone that stores links to affirmation tracks on Insight timer, voice recordings I’ve recorded of myself speaking affirmations, and a playlist of encouraging songs to get my mind in a positive place and take advantage of early morning flexible brain waves.  I listen to this list as I walk my dog in the morning, and at some point it transitions to my google speaker and I play it throughout the house while I get ready.

In line with incorporating more positivity and mindset work into things I already do, when I saw someone selling shower affirmation cards online, I thought this was a great idea! I was inspired to create my own.  This way, while taking a shower, something I will do anyway, I can have some positive words seep in as well.  Click the video below to view my process, and you’ll find supplies and instructions after that to try this yourself.

It’s Your Turn!

DIY Shower Affirmation Card

Supplies:

  • Index card or blank cardstock paper

  • Watercolor paints (could use colored pencils, or markers instead)

  • Paint marker (could use a permanent marker instead)

  • 4x6 photo self-sealing lamination packet (here and here are a couple of options online for these)

Instructions:

  1. Create your own or find an affirmation phrase you’d like to tell yourself.  Positive, present-tense language is best when creating affirmations since that is more clear for your brain to easily absorb.  For example “I learn new things easily.” would be more powerful than “I will not be confused any longer when learning new things.”  The goal is to write what you want to be true so your brain welcomes the idea, then your body, words, and actions carry it out and operate from that high, positive energy level.

  2. Paint or color the background on your index card or paper.  Let paint dry if you painted.

  3. Write your affirmation phrase on the card/paper.

  4. If needed, trim the size of the card to allow for at least a ½ cm or ¼ inch border on all four sides of the lamination packet.  The goal is to have the packet form a total seal around the paper to not let in any water while being displayed in the shower.

  5. Following the directions on the lamination paper, press your card/paper onto one side, then press down the other side, pushing any air bubbles out with your hand.

  6. Next time you bathe, let the wall of the shower or bathtub get a little wet, then stick the card to the wall at eye level where you can see it.  No adhesive was needed, mine even held after I was finished showering!

  7. Tip - make a few shower affirmation cards and rotate between them!

Enjoy! Let me know if you have any questions or how it goes for you!
